The the retail marijuana industry is starting to take shape in Washington, and the Washington State Liquor Control Board is continuing to shape the regulations that will guide the new industry. The newest adopted rules outline what food products may and may not be infused with marijuana for sale in retail facilities.
What stuck out to most people is the allowance of baked goods such as cookies and brownies, and the prohibition of candies from food products that are allowed to be infused with marijuana.
To gain approval to market a marijuana infused food item, such as brownies or bottled drinks, a processor must submit a photo of the product along with its labels and packaging. The edible also has to pass a processing facility inspection and must be clearly labeled as containing marijuana.
Edibles also must be tested for potency and to ensure that the marijuana derivatives are spread evenly throughout the products.
