Federal police confiscated 15 tons of marijuana from a truck crossing into the U.S. from Mexico at Otay Mesa boarder crossing, making it the second largest boarder crossing marijuana seizure in the U.S. The estimated street value was $18.96 million.
The truck attempting to smuggle in the 15 tons of contraband from Mexico to California was labeled as a mattress truck, when officials thought there was something suspicious about the vehicle. A Customs and Border Police officer had the cargo bay X-rayed, and the objects inside didn’t look right, the CBP said in a statement.
While some may tout the incident as an example for the continued need for the war on drugs, professionals in the budding legal marijuana business will point out this as an example of the failed war on drugs. With marijuana becoming medicinally legal in an increasing number of states, and retail marijuana following suite, the question now is, why did we wait so long to end marijuana prohibition?
