Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes sent out a memo on Monday, January 5, addressing the need for regulation and clarification of Washington State’s medical marijuana dispensaries.
“If you’re a commercial (medical-marijuana) operation lacking a 502 license (Initiative 502), it’s a felony operation. Period,” said Holmes.
The memo comes as growing concerns mount regarding the need for regulating Washington’s medical marijuana market. Many believe that the medical market and subsequent gray market will undercut the highly tax recreational market.
Holmes also endorsed state Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles’ proposal to fold medical marijuana into the state’s highly regulated recreational system, and possibly lifting the number cap on license to any business that meets the qualifications. He also pushed for “marijuana lounges” that would allow users to consume marijuana on site.
